When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. From figuring out how to stay in touch to understanding what you can do to make their time easier, it can feel overwhelming. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get the lowdown on MI DOC - Charles Egeler Reception & Guidance Center (RGC) so you can stay connected and support your loved one during their time inside.
Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The RGC, inaugurated in 1988, serves as a pivotal quarantine facility responsible for the intake processing of all male offenders adjudicated as adults and sentenced to incarceration within the Michigan DOC. This facility plays a crucial role in the assessment, screening, and classification of new commitments and parole violators before their placement in general population prisons across the agency. Situated on 53 acres, RGC encompasses the 152-bed Duane L. Waters Health Center and was established alongside the Parnall Correctional Facility, carved out of the old State Prison of Southern Michigan (SPSM).
Comprising three distinct units, the Reception and Guidance Center caters to various prisoner needs. The RGC Main Complex houses quarantine prisoners awaiting the completion of their reception center processing. C Unit accommodates Level II security prisoners, primarily those with medical issues. Meanwhile, the Duane L. Waters Health Center offers medical services to male and female prisoners throughout the Michigan Department of Corrections, featuring telemedicine support services, inpatient care, and outpatient treatment.
Intake Processing at RGC is a comprehensive process involving psychological, medical, educational, and security classification evaluations upon prisoners' arrival. Professionally trained correctional healthcare staff conduct medical screenings during intake processing, which spans twelve days. Subsequently, prisoners are classified for transfer to general population facilities capable of meeting their medical, programmatic, and security needs. RGC serves as a temporary holding facility until prisoners are transferred to their permanent placement. Prisoners with significant medical needs or those involved in parole revocation hearings remain at the facility until their medical or due process concerns are resolved.
Security measures at the perimeter of the facility are stringent. A double chain-link fence equipped with a non-lethal stun fence, RB Tech, and concertina wire fortifies the perimeter. Additionally, a perimeter security vehicle is deployed when necessary to ensure the safety and security of the facility. These measures underscore RGC's commitment to maintaining order and security within its confines while facilitating the intake and processing of incoming prisoners.
RGC maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
