San Francisco County Jail #2, recognized as a "New Generation" direct supervision facility, employs a pod-style architectural design for its inmate housing areas. This innovative layout enhances the ability of deputized staff to maintain visual and audio surveillance over the inmate population, thus improving overall safety and management. The facility has a rated capacity of 392 inmates and is distinct in that it is the only jail within the county that houses women. Both male and female inmates, whether sentenced or pre-sentenced, are confined here.

The facility is equipped with its infirmary, a dental office, and a medical observation pod specifically designed to cater to inmates with specialized medical and psychiatric needs. Medical services are available 24/7, ensuring continuous care for the inmate population.

In addition to medical services, San Francisco County Jail #2 offers a range of in-custody programs aimed at rehabilitation and education. These programs include:

  • SISTERS: A program designed to support and empower female inmates through education and personal development.
  • SFSD Five Keys Charter School: An educational initiative that provides inmates with the opportunity to pursue their high school diplomas or GEDs.
  • Keys to Freedom: A program focused on equipping inmates with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful reintegration into society upon release.
  • One Family: A program aimed at helping inmates maintain and strengthen family connections during incarceration.

These programs reflect the facility's commitment to providing inmates with opportunities for personal growth and preparation for life after incarceration.

Movement outside the pod, such as trips to the commissary, library, or recreation area, occurs under the constant supervision of unarmed correctional officers. The environment in the county jail is considered less stressful than that of a prison because the sentences are much shorter.

Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. The Jail enforces this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

Inmate workers are chosen based on conduct and cooperation with staff. Participation in the community service program can sometimes reduce sentences. Commissary is available weekly, with orders submitted via kiosk two days in advance. On holidays, there may be increased spending limits. Upon receiving commissary items, inmates must present their ID, check their order, and sign for it in the presence of the commissary employee. Indigent inmates are provided with all essential basic hygiene items including USPS stamps and writing materials.
