The relation to time is difficult. Prison time is like the movie "Groundhog Day" where every day you wake up is exactly like the days, months and years before it. It is hard to relate to anything but the routine you have to get yourself in. The routine makes the time pass. The best scenarios are when the inmate incorporates a few positive learning attributes into their routine. Inmates that prepare for their release within the daily routine will be ready for the societal readjustment and reentry. If the inmate wastes time with idle chit-chat among other inmates that are not preparing themselves, they are doomed to repeat this - that too like Groundhog Day. Doing time with a purpose will be the best use of their sentence so that time is not lost.
