Hi, my brother Inlaw from New Zealand is awaiting a sentence in California usa. He is looking at a couple years behind bars. What advice can you give to staying out of trouble and staying positive.

The best advise is to let this set-back be the foundation for his rebound. If he has to do time, make a plan on what he is going to accomplish with that time. Inmates are best served with a set routine where they can remained mental engaged in something positive. Reading and exercise are crucial. Trouble is only where you look for it. The "inside" is like a community and inmates can steer clear of trouble by minding his own business and keeping his opinions to himself. He has to "do the time", not the "let the time do him".
