Texts reveal details in homicide investigation

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) -- Ex-Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arraigned on 1st degree murder and numerous firearms charges after he was taken into custody on Wednesday morning in connection to the shooting death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd.

Lloyd's relatives said he was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee, that the two men were friends and that both men were out together on the last night of Lloyd's life.

According to Prosecution:

Odin Lloyd was last seen in the company of Aaron Hernandez on June 17, 2013 at approximately 2:30 in the morning. His body was discovered at 5:30 p.m. by a jogger in a secluded area in an industrial park, an area that was used as storage for gravel and sand. The jogger notified a nearby business and he and the employee called 911.

When police approached the scene, they discovered that Mr. Lloyd had been struck in his arm, side, back and chest. According to police, five .45 caliber shells were discovered at the scene.

Lloyd’s body was found with his wallet, phone and keys in one of his pockets. Police quickly determined his identification based on his license that was found in his wallet. The keys that were found in his pocket were traced back to a car that was rented by Hernandez.

The phone that was recovered revealed that there had been communication between Hernandez and Lloyd within hours before the victim’s death.

Lloyd’s sister told investigators that at 2:30 a.m. on the 17th, she had been out in front of her house and watched her brother get into a silver Nissan Altima. The investigation revealed that Hernandez had been renting the silver Nissan Altima.

According to Lloyd’s sister, there were three people in the car when Lloyd entered, and Lloyd and Hernandez had known each other for about a year. Though they had previously only spoken at family events, Lloyd and Hernandez began to get together outside of group gatherings.

When investigators later knocked on the door of Hernandez’s North Attleboro home, there was no answer, although the lights and TV were on in the home. Soon after, Hernandez came out in front of the house and said he had seen police on surveillance.

Police executed a search and found on the surveillance footage shortly after the victim’s death that the footage was missing.

They then examined the victim's phone and found text messages that began on Sunday night:

9:02 p.m.– Hernandez sent a text to a friend who was out of state, “Please make it back.”

9:05 p.m – Hernandez texted the victim saying he wanted to come by and get together with him.

9:35 p.m – Hernandez texted a friend from Connecticut and wrote, “Get your ass up here.”

10:23 p.m – Hernandez texted the same friend, “Hurry your ass up.”

Soon after his friends arrived and Hernandez met with them outside, they went inside and Hernandez was seen with a firearm. Prosecutors said that Hernandez made the statement that he “can’t trust anyone anymore.”

1:12 a.m. – The group of three left Hernandez’s home in a silver Nissan. The car began its course from Hernandez’s home to I-95, and shortly after turned around and headed north. A cell tower tracked their movements to a gas station on Route 128.

2:10 a.m. – Car stopped, Hernandez bought gas. One bought Bubblicious blue cotton candy gum and black and milds that were used for rolling papers. The group then got back in the car and continued to Lloyd’s home.

2:32 a.m. – Car arrived outside Lloyd’s home. Text was sent to Lloyd, “We’re here”. Sister then saw Lloyd enter the car that Hernandez was in.

According to the prosecution, during the car ride Hernandez told Lloyd that certain things had happened on Friday night that he was upset about. Lloyd had spoken to people at a club in Boston that both men were at and Hernandez had ‘sensed troubles about them.’

3:07 a.m. - Lloyd sent a text to his sister “Did you see who I am with?”

3:11 a.m. – After no response, Lloyd sent second text, “Hello?”

3:19 a.m. – Lloyd’s sister responded and said, “Who?”

3:22 a.m. - Lloyd responded “NFL” - At this time, the car entered into the industrial park.

3:23 a.m. – Lloyd’s final text read “Just so you know.”

3:23 – 3:27 a.m – People working in the industrial park report hearing gunshots.

3:29 a.m. – Hernandez seen coming up his driveway at his North Attleboro home.

The gum that was purchased at the gas station around 2:10 in the morning resurfaced when the rental car was returned. According to the prosecution, Hernandez offered a piece of the gum to the rental agency attendant when the car was returned after the murder. The attendant then found a piece of chewed blue gum in the car, next to a shell casing that was then tossed in a dumpster.

Investigators found at the bottom of the dumpster a .45 caliber shell casing and a piece of chewed Bubblicious gum.

Prosecutors told the court that forensics indicate that casing matches the ones found at the murder scene.

Aaron Hernandez was ordered and held without bail and is due back in court on July 24.
