The Ada Co Jail is a detention center located at 7210 Barrister Dr Boise, ID which is operated locally by the Ada County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Ada County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Boise Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Ada County Jail, established in 1977 as part of the Ada County-Boise City Public Safety Building, has undergone multiple expansions over the years. Originally designed to accommodate a maximum of 160 inmates plus 32 work release prisoners, it now boasts a total inmate capacity of 1224.
Inmate classification is a vital aspect of the facility's operations, ensuring heightened security for both inmates and staff. Classification involves a thorough risk assessment based on an inmate's criminal history, behavior, and any mental or physical disabilities. Inmates are assigned security risk levels ranging from minimum to maximum, dictating their privileges and access to programs.
The jail employs various inmate supervision methods, including the Close Custody Unit (CCU) for more violent offenders and Direct Supervision, which utilizes dormitory-style housing. Each male dorm accommodates 92 inmates, while female dorms house 56, with one deputy typically overseeing an entire dorm.
Incoming mail to inmates must be properly addressed and may be scanned for contraband or security threats. Inmates may receive written letters and standard photographs but are prohibited from receiving certain items, including Polaroid photographs and materials depicting nudity or gang-related content.
Phone calls to inmates are not permitted, but inmates can purchase phone time for outgoing calls. Money deposited into an inmate's trust account can be used to buy items from the commissary, with a portion automatically allocated for medical co-pays. Inmates must maintain a minimum balance in their account for essential items, and revenue generated from the commissary program is reinvested in inmate-related services and amenities.
Overall, the Ada County Jail is committed to maintaining safety, security, and humane treatment for all individuals in its custody, while also facilitating essential communication and financial transactions between inmates and their support networks.
