The Red Eagle CWC is overseen by the Alabama Department of Corrections and consists of six community-based programs that supervise both pre-sentenced and sentenced offenders, prioritizing public safety and cost-effective alternatives to incarceration. Working in collaboration with the Department's Work Release Center, located at 1290 Red Eagle Rd Montgomery, AL, and other criminal justice agencies, the division oversees thousands of offenders in the community.
Red Eagle Community Work Center, situated on 364 acres approximately three miles north of Montgomery, is a minimum-security state prison facility operated by the Alabama Department of Corrections. The facility opened in 1972, derives its name from William Weatherford, a prominent Indian leader known as Red Eagle, whose birthplace is believed to be on the property.
The primary mission of Red Eagle is to provide suitable surroundings, work programs, and staff support to assist male inmates in reintegrating into society. The facility places a strong emphasis on workforce development and strives to maintain a highly qualified staff to facilitate the rehabilitation process. Religious programs are overseen by a part-time chaplain, with volunteer groups offering additional support services.
Red Eagle inmates participate in the Work Release program, which allows selected individuals to engage in gainful employment in the community while being supervised in a community-based facility during non-working hours. Through this program, inmates have the opportunity to acquire job skills, earn wages, and prepare for their eventual release into society.
Inmates assigned to Red Eagle Community Work Center are offered various educational programs through Ingram State Technical College, including Adult Education and GED services. Additionally, inmates are assigned to jobs at various state, city, county, and federal agencies in the Montgomery area, contributing to their rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
It's important to note that participation in the Work Release program is contingent upon approval and placement in a paying job in the community. In the event of public protests regarding an inmate's participation in the program, the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) may reconsider their placement, potentially returning them to a more restrictive facility.
Overall, Red Eagle CWC serves as a crucial component of the correctional system in Alabama, aiming to equip inmates with the necessary tools and opportunities to successfully transition back into society upon their release.
