The Antrim Co Jail is a detention center located at 207 E Cayuga St Bellaire, MI which is operated locally by the Antrim County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Antrim County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Bellaire Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

The Antrim County Correctional Facility, established in 1955, has undergone numerous renovations to accommodate a growing inmate population and to comply with evolving Michigan Department of Corrections regulations. The facility is rated by the Michigan Department of Corrections to house 56 inmates.

The Antrim County Jail operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, staffed by a dedicated team comprising 14 full-time Corrections Deputies, a full-time Food Service Director, a full-time cook, one full-time and one part-time nurse, a part-time doctor, four corporals, and one sergeant who also serves as the Jail Administrator. All Corrections Officers are certified through EMPCO, in partnership with the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP), the Michigan Sheriffs’ Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC), and the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association (MSA). These officers must complete a four-week paid corrections school and maintain a minimum of 20 hours of continued annual training to retain their certification.

The responsibilities of the Corrections Officers encompass the daily operations of the jail, court escort security, inmate transport to and from other jurisdictions and state prisons across Michigan, and various other collateral duties. Some members of the Corrections Division are certified instructors in specialized areas, including firearms, TASER®, CPR/AED/First Aid, defensive tactics, OC/Pepper Spray, and fire training.

The jail staff is committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and sanitary facility, ensuring that all inmates are treated fairly and in accordance with state and federal laws, as well as the United States Constitution.

Recently, the facility has implemented the GUARDIAN RFID® system, which aids in maximizing defensibility, compliance, and operational efficiency by managing, monitoring, and tracking in-custody inmates in real time. GUARDIAN RFID is utilized by jails of varying sizes across the United States. Inmates are required to wear non-implantable RFID devices at all times, with any incidents of non-compliance resulting in fines and disciplinary action, including prosecution.

All systems and devices using RFID technology at the facility are designed, tested, and manufactured to comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations. The RF energy levels generated are comparable to those found in consumer electronics, and the inmate-worn devices are hypoallergenic. The RF-based inmate identification system is exclusively owned by Antrim County.

Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate.

Inmate workers are chosen based on conduct and cooperation with staff. Participation in the community service program can reduce sentences by one day for every 24 hours of work. Inmate workers receive double feeding trays and two mattresses. Commissary is available weekly, with orders submitted via kiosk two days in advance. On holidays, orders may be doubled. Indigent inmates must miss two commissary days to receive a weekly indigent pack containing basic hygiene items, and indigent mail is stamped only for the Attorney of Record or the Court. Upon receiving commissary items, inmates must present their ID, check their order, and sign for it in the presence of the commissary employee.

The jail offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may entail high fees per minute of usage. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
