Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The ADCRR-Lewis Barchey facility operates as one of the 8 inner prison units, catering to a diverse mix of low, medium, and high-security inmates who have been sentenced in State Court for durations exceeding one year. Constructed through a collaborative effort involving commercial and convict labor, ADCRR-Lewis-Barchey stands as a modern facility with a capacity surpassing 5,000 inmates. Alongside Barchey, other units within ADCRR-Lewis include the Bachman Unit (level 3), Buckley Unit (level 4), Eagle Point (level 2), Morey Unit (level 4), Rast Unit (levels 4-5), Stiner Unit (level 3), and the Sunrise Unit (level 5).
Work crews constitute an integral component of the facility's operations, engaging in various assignments spanning across industries and community projects facilitated by Arizona Correctional Industries and Intergovernmental Agreements. These crews undertake diverse tasks, ranging from agricultural work at Hickman’s Egg Farm to manufacturing activities at Playcraft Trailers. Additionally, inmates contribute to food service, building maintenance, vehicle upkeep, and general labor efforts aimed at maintaining institutional grounds.
Lewis work crews are regularly dispatched within local and surrounding communities, including Phoenix and Tonopah, as well as within the Lewis Complex itself. Some crews are designated as Fire Crews, presumably tasked with firefighting and related emergency response duties.
In terms of education, the Education Department at ADCRR-Lewis offers a comprehensive array of programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of inmates. These programs include special education, mandatory literacy, GED preparation, and vocational training opportunities. For inmates unable to participate in traditional classroom settings due to health or safety concerns, alternative instructional methods such as direct instruction, video/closed circuit instruction, and computer-assisted learning are available. Moreover, inmates have the option to pursue college-level correspondence courses at their own expense, with onsite education staff providing support and proctoring examinations.
Educators within the facility conduct thorough screenings to identify inmates' educational needs and determine the most suitable environment for program delivery, taking into account offender classification and security requirements. The implementation of the Inmate Program Plan (IPP) process ensures the creation of individualized schedules for inmates, guaranteeing access to relevant programs, including education and library services, on a daily basis. Materials and resources essential for educational and vocational pursuits are made accessible across all units within the facility, adhering to institutional security protocols and restrictions.
ADCRR Lewis-Barchey maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
