At Athens-Clarke County Diversion Center's state corrections facility, well-behaved inmates can join a work release program, getting regular jobs in the public sector during the day. Depending on the rules, they might work weekdays and go home at night, serving their sentences only on weekends. Some stay in halfway houses or at home when they're not working. As they get closer to getting out, they might switch to reintegration programs and could even get full-time jobs when they are released.

This program has perks like better chances of finding a job after getting out, finding work faster, making more money afterward, and being less likely to go back to jail. Athens-Clarke Diversion Center wants to help inmates succeed in getting back into society.

The Diversion Center, a project funded under the 2005 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) initiative as project #33, began operations in the spring of 2012. Managed by the Athens-Clarke County Corrections Department, the center is designed to accommodate non-violent offenders who are participating in a work-release program, thereby providing an alternative to housing them within the main jail complex.

Currently, the Diversion Center also functions as a Transition Center, facilitating the reintegration of returning citizens who are completing their sentences under the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC). The Transition Center supports these individuals by providing access to the comprehensive resources available within Athens-Clarke County, promoting employment stability, economic independence, and self-sufficiency before their release. By equipping returning citizens with these essential tools, the center aims to enhance their prospects for long-term success and diminish their chances of recidivism.

While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate.
