The AZDJC-Adobe Mountain School is within the jurisdiction of the Arizona Department of Juvenile Justice located at 2800 W Pinnacle Peak Rd, Phoenix, AZ.
The facility provides supervision of youth in a safe, secure and humane environment. Services for youth include education, mental health, substance abuse, and health care. Medical and mental health are contracted services. Educational services are funded by the Arizona Department of Education through local school districts.
A typical day in secure detention would involve hygiene, meals, school, structured physical and educational activities, and court appearance as scheduled. The average length of stay in secure state detention is approximately 60 days.
Upon admission to Adobe Mountain School, all new youth residents undergo a thorough rehabilitative programming process tailored to their age, risk factors, needs, abilities, and the nature of their offenses. This comprehensive process encompasses screening, assessment, classification review, and orientation regarding the Department's policies, procedures, rules, programs, and services. Known as the Reception, Assessment, and Classification (RAC) process, it unfolds within the first 23 days following the youth's arrival. Upon completion of all necessary screenings and assessments, a Classification Assessment Summary (CAS) is generated, and the youth is assigned to a housing unit where an individualized Continuous Case Plan (CCP) is developed. This CCP is dynamic, evolving to address the changing needs and progress of the youth, guiding them through their transition back to the community.
Youth behavior management at Adobe Mountain School is a systematic process designed to ensure the safety and security of both residents and staff, as well as to maintain an environment conducive to effective service provision. The facility operates on a highly structured, disciplined, and organized program schedule, with correctional staff closely monitoring and managing youth movement within the complex and various work sites. As part of its approach, the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) employs the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) framework, which provides behavioral support to youth in social, emotional, and academic domains. PBIS is evidence-based, incorporating diverse approaches validated through research to be effective. Prevention and sustained use of effective practices are emphasized, with PBIS employing a team-based approach to problem-solving grounded in data-driven decision-making.
