In November 2022, Berks County officially ended its contract with ICE, marking the closure of the Berks County Detention Center in Leesport, Pennsylvania. This milestone was achieved through the persistent efforts of the Shut Down Berks Coalition, a movement driven by Pennsylvania's immigrant community, advocacy organizations, and their allies. The coalition's campaign, which began in 2015, was fueled by the sexual assault of a 19-year-old mother at the facility. Motivated by the center's long history of abuse and violence, the community united to call for its closure. After eight years of dedicated activism, their mission was accomplished, and the Berks County Detention Center was shut down.
