The Bibb Co Jail is a detention center located at 668 Oglethorpe St Macon, GA which is operated locally by the Bibb County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Bibb County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Macon Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

The Bibb County Corrections Unit currently houses over 900 inmates, an expansion from its original capacity of 585 in 2007 to accommodate the growing population of the city and county. Staffed by over 140 employees, the facility is equipped with a fully operational infirmary managed by three full-time nurses, two part-time nurses, and a part-time physician, providing comprehensive medical care within the institution.

The facility operates a fully equipped kitchen where meals are prepared by inmates under the supervision of jail staff. Additionally, supervised inmates are responsible for building maintenance, laundry, and cleaning, ensuring the smooth functioning of the facility's daily operations.

The Bibb County Jail incarcerates both male and female inmates aged 17 and older, who have been charged or convicted of misdemeanor or felony crimes. Sentences for these inmates range from one year to life without parole. Inmates sentenced to more than one year serve their time in state or federal facilities.

The operational objective of the Bibb County Jail is to maintain a safe and secure environment for pretrial detainees while providing for their basic needs, including food, clothing, shelter, mental health care, and medical care. The facility ensures the security of the jail from escapes and supervises inmates' daily activities such as feeding, cleaning, court appearances, medical appointments, visitations, library access, religious services, and outside recreation. Additional responsibilities include preparing and transporting inmates to court, facilitating attorney and court official visits, and transporting inmates to and from various jails and prisons throughout the state. Officers receive proper and current training, and the facility provides backup to other divisions within the department and assists the community during emergencies.

The jail offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may entail high fees per minute of usage. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. The Jail enforces this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office Detention Center serves as a Work Release and Community Service Center with approximately 192 beds. These are divided between the work release program and the community service program. The work release program allows detainees to continue working in the private sector, enabling them to pay fines, make restitution, and support their families, reducing the financial burden on taxpayers. In contrast, the community service section assigns detainees to perform court-ordered community service hours, saving the city and county over $500,000 annually in jobs that would otherwise require contracting out.

The Detention Center is managed by a Major, Captain, Senior Lieutenant, Junior Lieutenant, Sergeant, twenty-one Deputies, and four Bailiffs. The center’s objectives include continually improving operations by adopting effective and proven methods for maintaining a facility of its size, staying informed about existing laws about corrections, providing and maintaining current equipment and safety devices, and efficiently working with the judicial system and various local, state, and federal agencies. The facility also aims to offer a secure and efficient environment for visitors and court officials conducting business at the center.
