The Big Horn Co Jail is a detention center located at 420 C St Basin, WY which is operated locally by the Big Horn County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Big Horn County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Basin Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Big Horn County Detention Center, which opened in 2001, can accommodate 86 inmates at any given time. It houses not only Big Horn County inmates but also inmates for the US Marshals of Montana, US Marshals of Wyoming, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Federal inmates are held on contract, with fees negotiated with each agency.
The Detention Center employs 12 full-time POST-certified deputies. The Housing Control section is staffed by four full-time employees, and the kitchen staff includes two full-time cooks responsible for preparing three well-balanced meals per day, serving an average of 5,000 meals per month. Additionally, the jail has a contract with Midway Clinic of Basin to provide on-site nursing and physician visits.
Inmates have access to telephones in their pods through a service provided by Securus Technologies, with some 15-minute calls costing over $10.00. InmateAid offers the same call for $3.15. For details, click here.
