The Bristol Bay Borough Police Department is driven by a steadfast mission: to foster a secure environment for all residents, visitors, and enterprises within our jurisdiction. We actively encourage and welcome community engagement and support, recognizing it as pivotal to our shared safety and well-being. Firmly rooted in the principles of Community Policing, we prioritize proactive problem-solving, crime prevention, and collaborative partnerships with the community. Through these enduring alliances, we continually strengthen our ties with the community, ensuring that Bristol Bay Borough remains a thriving hub for living, working, and recreation.
Established in 1965, the Bristol Bay Borough Police Department comprises a dedicated team of 12 members when fully staffed. This includes the Chief of Police, four full-time police officers, one seasonal police officer, and six dispatchers/corrections officers, two of whom also fulfill duties within the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). With an approximate year-round population of 900 residents, our community experiences a significant influx during the summer months, swelling to around 15,000 individuals due to the bustling commercial fishing, sport fishing, and eco-tourism industries. Notably, Katmai National Park lies just a brief 15-minute float plane ride from King Salmon, Alaska.
Covering the expansive territory of King Salmon, Naknek, and South Naknek, totaling 888 square miles, the Bristol Bay Borough Police Department is accustomed to addressing calls for service across remote areas. Officers often navigate via air or watercraft to reach these locations. Operating on 8-hour shifts, officers predominantly work solo, equipped with comprehensive gear, including a marked patrol vehicle assigned for take-home use. Our officers assume full responsibility for all aspects of a case, from initial response to thorough investigation, evidence collection, and follow-up inquiries. Without a dedicated Criminal Investigation Division (CID), our officers see cases through from inception to resolution, embodying our commitment to comprehensive law enforcement services.
