The Bulloch Co Jail is a detention center located at 17301 US Hwy 301 N Statesboro, GA which is operated locally by the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Bulloch County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Statesboro Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The BCCI provides safe and secure housing for state inmates under contract with the Georgia Department of Corrections, as well as inmates sentenced by the County. Established in 1946, BCCI has primarily functioned as a work camp for state prisoners and county offenders requiring secure incarceration. Inmates at BCCI contribute significantly to the county by serving as a labor force for various departments, including public works, solid waste management, the recreation department, facilities maintenance, and the agricultural complex, along with other agencies as needed. They perform tasks such as operating equipment for road maintenance, groundskeeping and maintenance of parks and recreation facilities, upkeep of the agricultural arena, repairing county buildings, maintaining county vehicles and heavy equipment, roadside trash collection, solid waste removal, and providing food service for the county jail. An internal study on inmate labor highlighted that this workforce delivers approximately $3.0 million in net value annually to Bulloch County. Furthermore, BCCI emphasizes anti-recidivism by offering comprehensive programs aimed at helping offenders reform and become productive citizens. The State of Georgia reimburses BCCI at a rate of $22 per day for each state inmate housed at the facility.
