The Carroll Co Jail is a detention center located at 106 S Folger St Carrollton, MO which is operated locally by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Carroll County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Carrollton Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Carroll County Sheriff's Quarters and Jail, a historic structure, represents a blend of law enforcement history and architectural heritage. Built in 1878, the facility originally consisted of a two-story brick residence in the Classical Revival style, topped with a hipped roof, serving as the sheriff's residence. An attached jail was later constructed in 1958 to replace the original structure, which had collapsed. The combined residence and jail reflect the traditional integration of law enforcement and residential functions common in the 19th century. Recognized for its historical significance, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office continues to serve as the central hub for law enforcement and administrative functions within the county, though it no longer operates a long-term jail facility. Instead, the office focuses on a wide range of responsibilities:
When an individual is arrested in Carroll County, the Sheriff’s Office oversees the initial booking process. This involves documenting personal details, recording the arrest circumstances, and capturing fingerprints and photographs. Due to the county's limited 6-bed holding jail, detainees are only held for a short duration—typically 48 to 72 hours.
Following this period, arrestees are transferred to either the Missouri Department of Corrections or a regional detention facility equipped to provide secure housing and comprehensive inmate management.
The regional detention facilities handle all aspects of detainee care, ensuring they are securely detained while awaiting trial or sentencing. These centers provide:
This arrangement allows detainees to access necessary resources while ensuring that the Sheriff’s Office can focus on its primary duties of maintaining law and order.
By transferring detainees to regional facilities, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office ensures secure, humane, and efficient management of incarcerated individuals. This partnership allows the Sheriff’s Office to prioritize law enforcement and community engagement while leveraging the specialized infrastructure of regional detention centers. Together, these efforts uphold public safety, streamline operations, and provide detainees with access to the services required for their legal and rehabilitative needs.
