When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The ASP serves as a crucial hub for reentry programming, focusing on preparing offenders for successful transitions back into society upon their release. Through the Reentry Hub, ASP assists inmates in developing parole plans, acquiring social skills, accessing community services, and garnering public support, all aimed at facilitating a smooth reintegration process.
In addition to its reentry initiatives, ASP hosts Inmate Leisure Time Activity Groups (ILTAGS), offering 18 active programs focused on 12-step recovery. These programs provide inmates with the opportunity to address their addictions and embrace sober living within a supportive classroom environment. Staff sponsors facilitate these sessions, utilizing materials donated by external organizations and books procured by the institution. ILTAGS are conducted across Facilities A through F, fostering inmate participation and engagement.
Established in 1987 as the Kings County State Prison, ASP holds historical significance as the first institution initiated by a local community in California. Upon its inauguration, it marked the first entirely new prison construction in the state in two decades. Subsequently, on February 22, 1988, the facility was officially designated as Avenal State Prison, solidifying its place in California's correctional landscape.
