The Cheltenham Youth Facility is within the jurisdiction of the Maryland Department of Juvenile Justice located at 11001 Frank Tiplett Road, Cheltenham, MD.
The facility provides supervision of youth in a safe, secure and humane environment. Services for youth include education, mental health, substance abuse, and health care. Medical and mental health are contracted services. Educational services are funded by the Maryland Department of Education through local school districts.
A typical day in secure detention would involve hygiene, meals, school, structured physical and educational activities, and court appearance as scheduled. The average length of stay in secure state detention is approximately 60 days.
The Cheltenham Youth Facility (CYF) originally opened in 1870. In 1937, it was known as the Cheltenham School for Boys. Twelve years later, the facility was renamed Boys' Village of Maryland. The facility took it's current name in 1992.
Located in Prince George's County, CYF serves as a secure detention facility for male youth who are waiting to go to court or be placed in a treatment facility. CYF primarily serves male youth from Prince George's, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties.
CYF provides dietary, medical, educational and counseling services as well recreational space. In addition to receiving services, youth residing at CYF attend school in the facility year round, five days a week for six hours a day.
