The Chesapeake Juvenile Detention Center is within the jurisdiction of the Chesapeake Department of Juvenile Justice located at 420 Albemarle Dr, Chesapeake, VA. The facility provides supervision of youth in a safe, secure and humane environment. Youth services include education, mental health, substance abuse, and health care. Medical and mental health are contracted services. Educational services are funded by the Virginia Department of Education through local school districts.
A typical day in secure detention would involve hygiene, meals, school, structured physical and educational activities, and court appearances as scheduled. The average length of stay in secure state detention is approximately 60 days.
Juvenile detention at Chesapeake Juvenile Services provides a secure environment for youth awaiting court hearings or serving a court-ordered disposition. The facility operates with a focus on fairness, accountability, and rehabilitation, ensuring that all residents are treated with respect while being held responsible for their behavior. Residents who follow facility rules and program expectations can earn additional privileges and freedoms, while those who engage in disruptive behavior, fail to participate, or violate rules may face disciplinary actions, loss of privileges, or additional criminal charges for serious infractions such as property destruction or assault.
Upon intake, residents undergo a search, hygiene protocol, and health screening, after which they are issued detention clothing and personal hygiene items. Staff conduct an initial interview to gather relevant information, and parents or guardians are notified of the juvenile’s placement, at which time they are allowed a brief phone conversation with their child. All personal belongings, including clothing, letters, and pictures, are securely stored until release. Juveniles are assigned to a housing unit with designated common areas for meals, education, and structured activities.
Residents receive medical screenings by facility nurses upon arrival, with medications properly labeled and submitted by parents or guardians at the main reception. Counseling services are available for those who need emotional support or assistance adjusting to detention. State law mandates school attendance, and Chesapeake Juvenile Services provides structured classroom education to ensure that juveniles continue their studies while in detention. Residents are also provided three nutritious meals daily, plus a snack, and are expected to follow proper table manners and meal procedures, including no food trading.
Hygiene is strictly enforced, with residents required to shower daily, brush their teeth twice a day, and wear properly issued clothing. Socks, t-shirts, and underwear are distributed at shower time to maintain cleanliness. Residents may wear personal athletic shoes with non-marking soles, but if they arrive with non-approved footwear, they will be issued facility shoes. Parents may bring one pair of approved shoes Monday through Friday during designated hours.
Phone calls are a privilege earned through good behavior, with residents allowed to call only parents or legal guardians. Calls are placed and monitored by staff, who verify the identity of the recipient before connecting the resident. Incoming personal calls are not permitted, and messages will not be taken. However, legal professionals, probation officers, and social workers may schedule calls as needed, and staff will notify juveniles of family emergencies.
Residents may send and receive mail, though correspondence with other juvenile detention or correctional facility residents is prohibited. Letters are reviewed for content and security concerns before being distributed. Chesapeake Juvenile Services maintains a structured, secure, and rehabilitative environment, focusing on education, personal development, and accountability, ensuring that juveniles have the necessary structure and support while in custody.
