The Chippewa Co Jail is a detention center located at 50 E Spruce St Chippewa Falls, WI which is operated locally by the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Chippewa County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Chippewa Falls Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

The Chippewa County Jail has seen extensive changes since its original construction alongside a Sheriff’s residence in 1949. Initially designed to hold 18 secure inmates, the jail's capacity and facilities have been expanded several times over the decades. By 1979, the Sheriff's residence was converted entirely into office space for Sheriff’s personnel and a dispatch center. Enhancements continued with the addition of a Huber work release dormitory in 1985, increasing capacity to 42 inmates. Subsequent expansions in 1992 and 2002 further raised inmate capacity to 79 and 199, respectively. Today, the facility encompasses approximately 60,000 square feet across three floors.

Significant upgrades include the installation of a complete kitchen and the implementation of a comprehensive inmate classification system, mandated by the state in 2006. This system involves assessing inmates through a series of questions to appropriately group them by classification. The jail now also features special needs housing on its second and third floors, and the second floor is designed with a podular layout. This area includes three rooms for educational and religious classes, and seven video visiting booths that enable inmates to connect with their families.

Operated under the constitutional authority of the Sheriff, the Chippewa County Jail is one of 72 county jails in Wisconsin and plays a crucial role in the criminal justice system. It processes prisoners from local law enforcement agencies, holds individuals serving court-ordered sentences, and detains those awaiting trial who cannot post bond.

The jail addresses a wide range of challenges, including meeting the substantial medical and psychological needs of many inmates. Its mission is to enhance community safety while caring for the individuals within its walls. The jail offers extensive programming aimed at aiding offenders in making positive life changes.
