The Christian Acres Juvenile Center is a medium to low-security detention center located at 200 Bailey St Tallulah, LA that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes of which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.
The juvenile justice system differs from the adult system, focusing on rehabilitation and recognizing the developmental differences in juveniles. It aims to protect both the child and the public and helps juveniles become productive adults.
Juveniles are detained if they pose a threat, may miss court, or violate court orders. Parental involvement is crucial for effective supervision and rehabilitation.
Key differences in terminology include "taken into custody" instead of "arrest" and "supervision" instead of "probation." Referrals usually come from law enforcement, and an intake social worker decides the juvenile's placement. An inquiry can lead to dismissal, corrective action, or court involvement.
The process includes a plea hearing, possible evaluations, a pre-trial conference, a fact-finding hearing, and a dispositional hearing to determine the case's outcome. Parents may need to cover associated costs.
Christian Acres, established in December 1981 as an alternative to conventional juvenile placement, is situated on approximately twenty acres of meticulously maintained land in Tallulah, Louisiana. Comprising seven residential homes, with six housing 12 youth each and one housing 10 youth, the facility also features an administration building, control station, and gymnasium. The gymnasium includes seven self-contained classrooms, maintenance areas, storage, kitchen, and dining room. Operating under the corporate auspices of Christian Acres Youth Center, Inc., the facility is designed to accommodate 106 male youth aged 12-17.
At Christian Acres, a deep respect for each resident's positive potential and self-determination guides the approach to placement, prioritizing individual resident needs within the program structure. While the program is designed for completion within six months, typical placements range from eight to twelve months. The mission and management philosophy of Christian Acres focus on providing a flexible, community-based alternative to traditional juvenile placement for residents referred by agencies with whom the facility has contractual agreements. Emphasizing education and role-modeling as catalysts for positive and lasting changes in attitude and behavior, the program seeks to enable residents to function in a non-secure setting within their community, utilizing available traditional community services.
The ultimate goal of Christian Acres is to facilitate successful re-entry into the home, work, and community environment, achieved through close coordination with the resident's support systems, including family, counseling staff, and school. With reintegration as a primary objective, the program incorporates carefully monitored, progressive steps towards societal reintegration.
Christian Acres places a strong emphasis on risk reduction, employing programs designed to assist residents in becoming law-abiding, self-sufficient members of the community, thus altering attitudes and reducing the likelihood of future anti-social behavior. The program fosters a relationship-based milieu with a focus on responsibility and accountability.
A direct approach to treatment issues, tailored to the cognitive level and sophistication of adolescents, is provided, along with a behavior modification program utilizing a token economy system to measure success. Positive behavioral changes achieved during residential care can become enduring characteristics that facilitate safe and productive reintegration into the community.
The academic program, provided through collaboration with the standard public education system, is tailored to meet the needs of residents across a range of abilities and grade levels. Satisfactory attendance and progression in education are mandatory components of the program.
