The Clay Co Jail is a detention center located at 300 Broadway St Louisville, IL which is operated locally by the Clay County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Clay County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Louisville Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

Since 1825, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office has been diligently serving the residents of Clay County under the leadership of Sheriff Andy Myers and his dedicated deputies. Their primary mission is to uphold public safety and maintain peace within the community. This entails round-the-clock patrol, surveillance, and dispatch services to promptly respond to any emergencies or incidents.

In addition to law enforcement duties, Sheriff Myers also serves as the warden of the county jail, which functions as a detention facility for individuals either serving court sentences or awaiting trial. The jail staff is responsible for the supervision, feeding, and overall care of inmates, as well as providing continuous telephone and radio dispatch services.

As mandated by statute, the Sheriff holds the crucial role of an "Officer of the Court." In this capacity, the Sheriff is tasked with the delivery of court orders, decrees, summonses, and other legal documents. Moreover, the Sheriff oversees courthouse and courtroom security, ensuring a safe and orderly environment for judicial proceedings. Additionally, the Sheriff serves as the custodian of all county property not directly under the jurisdiction of another official.

To effectively carry out these multifaceted responsibilities, the Sheriff's Office employs a dedicated team comprising nine patrol deputies, two school resource officers, six correction officers, two court security officers, and one administrative assistant. Together, they work tirelessly to uphold the law, protect the community, and ensure justice is served within Clay County.
