When someone you care about ends up in a state prison, it can be tough to navigate the ins and outs of the system. From figuring out how to stay in touch to understanding what you can do to make their time easier, it can feel overwhelming. That's where this webpage comes in handy. It's here to help you get the lowdown on CDOC-Sterling Correctional Facility (SCF) so you can stay connected and support your loved one during their time inside.
Communication is important, the prison offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
SCF is situated in the northeastern region of Colorado, approximately 120 miles northeast of Denver, spanning an area of 100 acres within a larger 765-acre site. The interior perimeter spans 80 acres, providing a secure environment for operations. Officially opened in June of 1999, SCF serves as a key correctional institution within the state.
With a capacity to accommodate 2,488 individuals, Sterling CF caters to a diverse range of custody levels, including Minimum, Minimum-Restricted, Medium, Close (general population), and Close (Management Control Comprehensive – MCC). This variety of custody levels allows for the appropriate housing and management of individuals with differing security and supervision needs.
SCF maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
To ensure fairness in visitation opportunities, SCF implements Visiting Sessions, which last 28 days, beginning on Friday and ending on Thursday. Blocks rotate through general population areas to provide equal access. Each session comprises 4 blocks, starting every Friday and concluding the following Thursday. SCF's 1st session of 203 began on January 6th, 2023. Visitors from different time zones should note that all scheduling operates on Mountain Standard Time. Visitors can partake in up to 3 in-person visits per block.
Scheduling for Friday, Saturday, Sunday may be for a single day, or Friday & Saturday, or Friday & Sunday. However, combinations like Friday, Saturday, and Sunday or Saturday and Sunday are not available. Visiting requests are accepted 24 hours a day via email. Up to four visitors can schedule per day for each offender. To ensure fairness, scheduling is allowed up to 7 days before the visit date, but no requests are accepted after 8 am the day prior to the visit.
Available visiting slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Once all slots are filled, no further requests can be considered. Visiting slots are determined by the Fire Safety Occupancy Load of the visiting rooms. SCF collaborates with local food vendors to offer meal-sharing opportunities during weekend visiting sessions. Vendor information and ordering requirements are provided in the visiting confirmation email.
Contact visits must be scheduled no later than 8:00 AM the previous day and no more than seven days in advance. Visitors can arrange a visit by emailing doc_scf_visiting_staff@state.co.us. If confirmation is not received by 12:00 PM on the day before the visit, individuals should call 970-521-8300 (7:30 AM - 5:45 PM) or send an email to the above address promptly. All visitors wishing to be active and approved on a visiting list must submit a visiting application beforehand, signed with a copy of a valid photo ID attached. The application and attachments can be sent via US mail or email to doc_scf_visiting_staff@state.co.us.
