Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Crawford County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Bucyrus Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Managed by a proficient staff of 30 corrections officers, the jail's operations are further supported by a Jail Physician and Registered Nurses. All activities and programs within the jail are overseen by the Sheriff, who is dedicated to ensuring a secure and safe environment for both inmates and staff. Facility Operations and Inmate Processing

The Crawford County Jail prioritizes security, striving to uphold public trust through meticulous daily operations. Corrections officers handle a variety of situations with professionalism, maintaining high standards of integrity. Inmates who do not post bail within the first 24 hours are required to appear before a judge. This initial appearance, conducted either in person or via telephone, involves the judge informing the inmate of the charges and setting the bond amount.

The intake process at the Crawford County Jail includes a thorough inventory of personal property, medical screening, and booking. Following this process, inmates are assigned to the general population. Housing assignments are determined based on the classification of their charges, whether felony or misdemeanor, to ensure effective management and safety within the facility.

Classification and Housing

Inmates are assigned to housing areas according to their classification, which assesses factors such as the severity of charges, behavioral history, and potential risks. Appeals regarding classification decisions must be submitted in writing within ten days, detailing any perceived inaccuracies, and a written response will be provided. Classifications are periodically reviewed to account for changes in charges or behavior. Compliance with jail rules typically results in a lower classification and more privileges, while rule violations or additional charges lead to a higher classification and fewer privileges. Notices of reclassification are issued, with appeals following the same procedure as initial classifications.

Inmate Housing and Activities

The Crawford County Jail is designed with a "pod" structure, featuring large common areas with fixed tables and attached seats, as well as individual cells typically on two levels. Inmates spend certain periods in their cells and others in the common areas, where they can engage in activities such as playing cards, games, reading, or watching television. Movement outside the pod, including trips to the commissary, library, or recreation area, occurs under the constant supervision of unarmed correctional officers. The jail environment is generally considered less stressful compared to that of a prison.

Inmate Workers and Commissary

Inmate workers are chosen based on their conduct and cooperation with staff. Participation in the community service program can result in sentence reductions, with one day deducted for every 24 hours of work performed. Inmate workers receive additional benefits such as double feeding trays and two mattresses. Commissary services are available weekly, with orders submitted via kiosk two days in advance. On holidays, orders may be doubled. Indigent inmates, who must miss two commissary days to qualify, receive a weekly indigent pack containing basic hygiene items. Indigent mail is stamped exclusively for the Attorney of Record or the Court. Upon receiving commissary items, inmates are required to present their ID, verify their order, and sign for it in the presence of the commissary employee.

Books, Magazines, Selfies and Phone Calls

Books and magazines for inmates must be ordered directly from the publisher to ensure compliance with facility regulations and prevent the introduction of contraband. Any items not received directly from the publisher will be rejected. Inmates can also receive letters and selfies through a specialized app, with packages starting at $8.00.

The jail offers a phone program for outbound calls only, as inmates cannot receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be costly, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may involve high fees per minute. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

The Crawford County Jail’s comprehensive operations and policies are designed to maintain security, ensure proper inmate management, and facilitate rehabilitation through various programs and services.
