The Dallas County - Letot Center is a medium to low-security detention center located at 10505 Denton Dr Dallas, TX that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes of which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.

The juvenile justice system differs from the adult system, focusing on rehabilitation and recognizing the developmental differences in juveniles. It aims to protect both the child and the public and helps juveniles become productive adults.

Juveniles are detained if they pose a threat, may miss court, or violate court orders. Parental involvement is crucial for effective supervision and rehabilitation.

Key differences in terminology include "taken into custody" instead of "arrest" and "supervision" instead of "probation." Referrals usually come from law enforcement, and an intake social worker decides the juvenile's placement. An inquiry can lead to dismissal, corrective action, or court involvement.

The process includes a plea hearing, possible evaluations, a pre-trial conference, a fact-finding hearing, and a dispositional hearing to determine the case's outcome. Parents may need to cover associated costs.

The Residential Services Division maintains the safety and care of residents at the Letot Residential Treatment Center, Letot Shelter, Lyle B. Medlock Residential Treatment Center, and Youth Village campus. Specially trained supervision officers provide quality care 24 hours a day. Each program offers visitation at specific times for residents and their guardians.

Letot-Intake:
The Letot Center’s Intake unit is the initial point of contact for youth entering the facility, focusing primarily on runaways and providing crisis intervention for both the youth and their families. This unit is designed for short-term stays, to facilitate the safe and amicable reunification of runaway youth with their families. Upon release, youth are provided with individualized treatment plans and guidance to support services, ensuring continued care and support.

Letot-Shelter:
Operating 24 hours a day, the Letot Center's residential emergency shelter can accommodate 10 boys and 24 girls experiencing crises. The shelter offers comprehensive services, including educational support through the Academy for Academic Excellence, case management, and clinical services. Although operations were significantly impacted by COVID-19 restrictions in March 2020, resulting in a limited schedule, some services resumed later in the year.

Letot-ASAP:
The Assessment, Stabilization, and Advancement Program for Trafficked Youth (ASAP) is an 8-bed unit specifically for girls who are at risk of or have been trafficked or exploited. The program ensures immediate access to food, shelter, clothing, and medical care upon entry. Once stabilized, the youth undergo thorough psychological assessments, receive therapy, and are linked to community resources tailored to their needs. The program, supported by trauma-informed practices and interventions, also engages with families to strengthen home dynamics and increase protective factors. Typically, youth stay in the program for up to 15 days, with possible extensions up to 90 days under certain circumstances.

Together, these units at the Letot Center provide critical support and intervention, aiming to stabilize and improve the lives of vulnerable youth in the community.
