The Dona Ana Co Jail is a detention center located at 1850 Cooper Loop Las Cruces, NM which is operated locally by the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Dona Ana County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Las Cruces Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Doña Ana County Detention Center, overseen by Director Bryan Baker, boasts a comprehensive staff of 197 individuals encompassing administrative, security, support, and medical personnel. Complementing county employees are 41 contract personnel and, often, up to 67 volunteers, contributing to the efficient operation of the facility. Divided into two distinct facilities—an adult and a juvenile facility—the center accommodates a broad spectrum of detainee needs.
The adult facility, designed to house up to 846 detainees, maintains an average occupancy of 809 individuals. In contrast to conventional linear jail setups, the adult detention facility utilizes glass partitions instead of bars, facilitating continuous observation by officers and ensuring detainees remain aware of their monitored status. This innovative design enhances security and supervision within the facility.
Constructed in 1995 with an initial capacity of 562 beds, the facility underwent expansion in 2000. Additional housing units were incorporated, accompanied by remodeling efforts that increased the bed count to 846 and expanded the total living space to 166,543 square feet. Detainees are accommodated across seven secure housing units, with most inmates sharing cells with at least one other individual.
The center predominantly houses pre-trial detainees, reflecting the average daily inmate population, which stood at 809 in the calendar year 2004. This statistic underscores the facility's critical role in facilitating legal processes and ensuring the welfare of detainees awaiting trial. Through its robust infrastructure and dedicated staff, the Doña Ana County Detention Center remains committed to upholding the highest standards of security, supervision, and care for its detainees.
When approved by the courts, inmates may be released from incarceration so that they may continue to work while serving their sentences. They return to the detention facility upon completion of their work shifts.
