The Emmet Co Jail is a detention center located at 450 Bay St Petoskey, MI which is operated locally by the Emmet County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Emmet County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Petoskey Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Emmet County Correctional Facility has a capacity of 103 beds and houses a diverse population of male and female inmates, both sentenced and non-sentenced, who are committed to the custody of the Sheriff for civil, misdemeanor, or felony charges.
The facility operates around the clock, 365 days a year, and is staffed by a Jail Administrator, four sergeants, thirteen correction officers, and a variety of support staff and volunteers. The primary goal is to maintain a secure environment that ensures the safety of both staff and inmates. The facility adheres to the Michigan Department of Corrections Administrative Rules for Jails and has been recognized for compliance with these rules from 2003 to 2019. The Corrections Division aims to provide effective inmate programs and services at minimal cost, facilitating a productive transition for inmates returning to the community. Most programs are offered by community volunteers.
Available programs and services for inmates include Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), substance abuse education and assessments, spiritual counseling, church services, Bible study, work release, work crew/trustee opportunities, medical services, mental health services, commissary, Thinking Matters, and Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
The jail offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may entail high fees per minute of usage. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
The only items accepted via mail at this facility are letters, postcards, and legal correspondence. All incoming mail is opened and inspected for contraband. Letters and envelopes that are decorated or sealed with lipstick, perfume, glue, stickers, or items deemed inappropriate will be placed on the inmate’s personal property. Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate.
