The Federal Correctional Institution, Danbury (FCI Danbury), located in Connecticut, is a low-security federal prison catering to both male and female inmates. Operated by the BOP, it also houses a nearby satellite prison camp (SCP) dedicated to minimum-security female offenders. Situated approximately 55 miles from New York City, 60 miles from Hartford, CT, and 150 miles from Boston, MA, the facility enjoys accessibility to various transportation hubs.
Established in 1940, FCI Danbury initially housed high-profile political prisoners during World War II, including conscientious objectors such as poet Robert Lowell and civil rights activist James Peck. From 1993 to 2013, the facility exclusively housed female prisoners. However, in August 2013, to alleviate overcrowding across the federal prison system, it was decided to convert FCI Danbury back to an all-male facility. For offenders who will give birth during their incarceration, there are two programs offered to assist these mothers before, during, and after childbirth; these include Mothers and Infants Together (MINT) and the Residential Parenting Program (RPP). The Program Statement, Female Offender Manual, is the agency's primary policy addressing the management of incarcerated women. The agency also issued an Operations Memorandum requiring all female sites to provide five types of feminine hygiene products to inmates free of charge.
