The Federal Correctional Institution, Memphis (FCI Memphis), previously classified as medium-security before being reclassified as low-security in June 2023, is located in Memphis, Tennessee. In early 2012, an investigation revealed that several inmates at FCI Memphis were involved in a marijuana distribution ring spanning three states. The ringleader, Mark Evans, along with accomplices, orchestrated the operation by receiving shipments of marijuana through the prison kitchen. Evans and his associates distributed the drugs to other inmates, generating substantial profits. The scheme involved corrupt prison staff and resulted in convictions and additional incarceration for those involved.
