CLOSING: The Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) continues to grapple with critical staffing shortages, deteriorating infrastructure, and limited budgetary resources. To address these systemic issues, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBOP are implementing measures to optimize resources, including suspending operations at FPC Morgantown. The 150 employees at FPC Morgantown will be reassigned to FCC Hazelton, while inmates will be relocated to other minimum-security facilities. The FBOP has committed to placing individuals within 500 miles of their release locations whenever possible while considering their program participation and specific needs.
HISTORY: The Federal Correctional Institution, Morgantown (FCI Morgantown) is a minimum-security federal prison for male inmates located in rural West Virginia, with a reputation for its relatively comfortable environment, earning it the nickname 'Club Fed.' Situated in the city of Morgantown, approximately 160 miles northeast of Charleston, the state capital, FCI Morgantown boasts amenities akin to a college-like campus, including a movie theater, a bocce ball court, and a basketball court. It primarily houses white-collar and nonviolent offenders.
