The FDJJ-Everglades Youth Academy (YA) is within the jurisdiction of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice located at 5050 NE 168th St, Okeechobee, FL.
The facility provides supervision of youth in a safe, secure and humane environment. Services for youth include education, mental health, substance abuse, and health care. Medical and mental health are contracted services. Educational services are funded by the Florida Department of Education through local school districts.
A typical day in secure detention would involve hygiene, meals, school, structured physical and educational activities, and court appearance as scheduled. The average length of stay in secure state detention is approximately 60 days.
The Everglades Youth Academy (YA) is a maximum-risk program catering to males aged 13 to 21. Operated by contracted provider Youth Opportunity Investments, LLC, Everglades is co-located with the Everglades Youth Academy Sex Offender Program (Everglades-SOP).
Delivering delinquency intervention and mental health treatment services, Everglades offers a range of program services. These include cognitive-behavioral treatment approaches, evidence-based programs, case management, individual and group counseling, educational and vocational assessments and training, cultural events, physical and recreational activities, routine medical and dental treatment, and aftercare preparation. The anticipated length of stay varies based on each youth's progress in achieving their personalized treatment plan and goals.
Everglades operates as a Type 3 program, providing education in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading. Additionally, it offers career and technical opportunities such as Culinary Arts and Business Education courses, along with a Home Builders Institute (HBI) pre-apprenticeship program focusing on construction trades. Education services are facilitated through a contract with the Okeechobee County School District. Furthermore, the program serves as a GED® test site, offering youths the opportunity to obtain their GED® certification.
Juvenile facilities overseen by the State of Florida do not publish the names of the offenders housed in their facility. As such, there is no public forum for this information.
