The Floyd Co Jail is a detention center located at 2526 New Calhoun Hwy NE Rome, GA which is operated locally by the Floyd County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Floyd County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Rome Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Floyd County Jail, the largest building owned by the Floyd County Government, spans 256,000 square feet and accommodates 714 beds. It serves the jurisdictions of Floyd County, the City of Rome, and Cave Spring, housing pre-trial detainees as well as inmates sentenced at both county and state levels. In 2020, the jail maintained an average daily inmate population of 507. Constructed in 1982, the facility underwent significant renovation in 1996, funded by a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). The jail continues to benefit from SPLOST allocations through the Jail Infrastructure Restoration Project (JIRP), which addresses ongoing infrastructure needs.
After processing, inmates are assigned to housing areas based on their classification. Compliance with jail rules generally results in a lower classification and increased privileges, while rule violations or additional charges lead to higher classification and fewer privileges. Trustees, or inmate workers within the jail, perform tasks such as cooking, laundry, and commissary management, often receiving minimal compensation or sentence reductions for their services.
The jail is structured into "pods," which include a large common area equipped with tables and attached seats, and individual cells typically arranged on two levels. Inmates are required to spend certain times confined in their cells. In contrast, at other times they congregate in the pod for recreational activities such as playing cards, engaging in games, reading, or watching television. Movement outside the pod, including visits to the commissary, library, or recreation area, occurs under the constant supervision of unarmed correctional officers. The county jail environment is considered less stressful than a prison, primarily due to the shorter duration of sentences served.
The jail provides a phone program exclusively for outbound calls; inmates are unable to receive incoming calls. Collect calls from inmates can be expensive, with costs sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company might involve high per-minute fees. For those who communicate frequently with inmates, click here for discounts on these calls. All phone conversations are recorded, so it is advised to avoid discussing sensitive legal matters.
Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that all items are new, untampered, and in compliance with the facility’s regulations, thus preventing the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. Orders not originating from the publisher will be rejected. In addition, inmates can receive letters, pictures, and selfies through a convenient app, with package options starting at $8.00.
Inmate workers are selected based on their conduct and cooperation with staff, and participating in the community service program can sometimes lead to sentence reductions. Commissary services are available weekly, with orders submitted via kiosk two days before delivery. During holidays, the spending limits may be increased. Upon receiving their commissary items, inmates must present identification, verify their order, and sign for it in the presence of the commissary employee. Essential hygiene items, including USPS stamps and writing materials, are provided to indigent inmates.
The administration of the jail is led by Major Allen Pledger, with Captain Nathan Blanton serving as the assistant jail administrator. For inquiries or contact, Major Pledger and Captain Blanton can be reached at (706) 314-0711. This leadership team oversees the jail's operations, ensuring the efficient management of inmate housing and the facility's ongoing infrastructure improvements.
