The Fond du Lac Co Secure Juvenile Detention Facility is a medium to low-security detention center located at 180 S Macy St Fond du Lac, WI that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes of which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.
The juvenile justice system differs from the adult system, focusing on rehabilitation and recognizing the developmental differences in juveniles. It aims to protect both the child and the public and helps juveniles become productive adults.
Juveniles are detained if they pose a threat, may miss court, or violate court orders. Parental involvement is crucial for effective supervision and rehabilitation.
Key differences in terminology include "taken into custody" instead of "arrest" and "supervision" instead of "probation." Referrals usually come from law enforcement, and an intake social worker decides the juvenile's placement. An inquiry can lead to dismissal, corrective action, or court involvement.
The process includes a plea hearing, possible evaluations, a pre-trial conference, a fact-finding hearing, and a dispositional hearing to determine the case's outcome. Parents may need to cover associated costs.
The Fond du Lac County Secure Detention Center is one of 13 such facilities in the state, with a rated capacity of 27 juveniles. This detention center serves juvenile offenders from Fond du Lac County and other counties in need of secure detention placements. Delinquent youths can remain in the facility for the duration of their sanctions or be transferred to state facilities if their sentence requires it. The facility employs a full-time Fond du Lac school teacher responsible for providing education to all incarcerated juveniles. Additionally, programs for juveniles are provided by the Department of Social Services and Juvenile Intake, as well as volunteers. These programs include Bible study, religious activities, and interactive recreation with Secure Detention staff. The facility is staffed at all times by two Fond du Lac County Correctional Deputies.
Upon admittance, the juvenile's social worker is required to complete a Visitor Registration Form and submit it to the jail staff. Juvenile detainees can be visited only by parents, guardians, grandparents, and siblings listed on the juvenile’s approved visitors list. All approved visitors must show a valid ID before visiting. Siblings under 18 years of age are permitted to visit with proof of a birth certificate and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Other visitors are allowed only with the approval of the Juvenile Superintendent and the assigned social worker. Requests for additional visitors should be submitted to the social worker, who will forward the request to the Juvenile Superintendent.
Juvenile facilities overseen by Fond Du Lac County do not publish the names of the offenders housed in their facility. As such, there is no public forum for this information.
