UPDATE: On December 18, 2024, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) permanently closed Federal Prison Camp (FPC) Pensacola, a minimum-security male facility, due to critical staffing shortages, deteriorating infrastructure, and limited financial resources. Located on Saufley Field and owned by the U.S. Navy, the property will be returned to the Navy, which plans to demolish the aging buildings. The FBOP confirmed that all 105 employees currently at FPC Pensacola will be reassigned to other federal facilities nationwide to help alleviate staffing shortages system-wide.

HISTORY: FPC Pensacola, was minimum-security federal prison for adult male inmates, is located on Saufley Field, an outlying Naval Air Station Pensacola airfield. Established in 1988, it has garnered attention for its unique characteristics, including housing inmates alongside civilians and military personnel. The closure of Federal Prison Camp, Eglin, in 2006 led to the relocation of inmates to FPC Pensacola, contributing to its diverse population. Notably, Forbes magazine recognized FPC Pensacola as the second "cushiest prison" in the United States in July 2009.

The inmate population includes individuals with notable backgrounds, such as Todd Chrisley, the reality TV personality convicted of bank fraud, Tim Donaghy, the former NBA referee involved in a bribery scandal, and Billy Walters, a professional sports gambler convicted of insider trading. Mark Whitacre, an FBI informant involved in the ADM price-fixing investigation, is another notable inmate.
