The Garland Detention Center serves as a low/medium-security city detention center located at 1891 Forest Ln in Garland, TX. Operated locally by the police and sheriff's departments, it houses inmates and detainees awaiting trial or sentencing. Most sentenced inmates have terms of less than two years. The facility also accepts inmates from surrounding towns and occasionally from the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees are regularly admitted to the jail, with some being released on bail or placed under pretrial services caseloads. Others may be supervised by probation agencies or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who remain in custody await their court appearances at the facility, receiving accommodations such as bedding and meals.

The Garland Detention Center operates continuously, providing round-the-clock, seven-day-a-week service for the temporary confinement of individuals involved in the judicial process. This facility is designed to house pre-trial detainees, individuals who are awaiting trial and presumed innocent but require maximum security until their court appearance. In addition to pre-trial detainees, the center also confines individuals serving sentences for misdemeanor offenses adjudicated by the Garland Municipal Court.
As a city detention center, Garland holds pre-trial detainees for only a brief period before they are transferred to another facility, particularly if they are unable to secure release. The Garland Detention Center has distinguished itself as one of the busiest jails in Dallas County, surpassed only by the Dallas County Jail. The facility can hold 137 adult prisoners and includes a designated processing area for detained juveniles. Juveniles, however, are typically not held for more than six hours before being released to a parent or guardian or transferred to a Dallas County Juvenile Department detention facility.
Due to the high volume of arrests processed annually, detainees charged with Class B misdemeanors or higher are promptly transported to the Dallas County Jail once their case is ready for filing with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. The Garland Detention Center thus plays a critical role in the initial stages of the judicial process, efficiently managing the intake and temporary confinement of individuals while ensuring that detainees are promptly transferred to the appropriate facilities based on the severity of their charges.
