The Gates County Sheriff's Office, operating without an on-site jail, serves the residents of Gates County with a dedicated team comprising 13 full-time officers, three auxiliary officers, and a support staff. Covering an area of 337 square miles, which includes approximately 14 miles of waterfront along the Chowan River, the Sheriff's Office is responsible for maintaining law and order across the county. With access to major highways connecting to the Southeastern Tidewater area and Northeastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks, the office plays a crucial role in regional law enforcement.

When an individual is arrested within the county, the sheriff's office handles the initial booking process, which includes documenting personal information, recording the details of the arrest, and taking fingerprints and photographs. Since the county lacks its own holding jail, the arrestees are not detained at the sheriff's administrative facility. Instead, they are promptly transferred to a nearby regional detention center. This regional facility is equipped to house inmates and manage their needs from the time of their arrest until their case is adjudicated.

The transfer to the nearby detention center ensures that all individuals are securely detained in a facility designed to handle various security and logistical needs. This center provides housing, meals, medical care, and access to legal resources for the detainees. It also facilitates visitation, communication with family and legal representatives, and participation in programs that may aid in their rehabilitation or legal defense.

The Sheriff, as the chief law enforcement officer, along with his deputies, is entrusted with the protection of life and property, enforcing both federal and state laws, and carrying out civil actions and court orders. The office is tasked with a wide range of duties, including providing security for criminal, civil, child support, and juvenile courts, where they ensure the safety of judges, court personnel, jurors, and the public. The Gates County Sheriff's Office handles major crimes such as murder, kidnapping, fraud, burglary, sexual assault, and narcotics enforcement, and also tracks all registered sex offenders within the county. Additionally, the office manages traffic enforcement, including drunk driving, speeding, and drug interdiction, while also addressing general crimes like trespassing, misdemeanor larcenies, and issuing criminal and civil papers. The Sheriff's Office provides security for schools, enforces animal control complaints, and upholds child custody orders and domestic violence protective orders. Mutual aid agreements with surrounding local, state, and federal agencies ensure cooperative efforts in handling various cases.

All deputies within the Gates County Sheriff's Office are certified in specialized areas such as radar operation, intoxilyzer use, and standardized field sobriety testing (DWI enforcement). They receive annual training through advanced programs offered by the North Carolina Justice Academy, Coastal Plains Training Academy, local community colleges, and departmental in-service training. Deputies are also trained biannually in firearms and specialty weapons and receive comprehensive training in Hazardous Materials, Bloodborne Pathogens, First Aid and CPR, pepper spray usage, fire suppression, and domestic violence and juvenile sensitivity. This extensive training ensures that the Sheriff's Office is well-prepared to serve and protect the community in a wide range of situations.

Visitation Information

The Gates Co Sheriff assumes a comprehensive role in law enforcement, encompassing duties such as patrolling, investigating crimes, making arrests, and executing warrants. This division of responsibilities allows the sheriff's team to concentrate on maintaining public safety and effective law enforcement operations, while detention services are outsourced to other jurisdictions due to the absence of a jail on-site.

The Sheriff's Office must coordinate with the nearby county jail or a regional jail to house their arrestees and you may call 252-357-0411 to get accurate information. This arrangement requires efficient collaboration and communication to transfer detainees to appropriate holding facilities where they can await trial or post bail. Consequently, there is no dedicated location within the sheriff's jurisdiction for visiting detainees, necessitating that family members and legal representatives travel to the external facilities where the arrestees are held.
