The Hamlin County Sheriff's Office, located inside the County Courthouse, operates under the leadership of Sheriff Chad Schlotterbeck. The office is staffed by the sheriff and five deputies, providing 24-hour law enforcement coverage across the county’s 538 square miles, serving a population of over 6,450 residents. The sheriff’s office is committed to public safety, crime prevention, and law enforcement, ensuring that the community receives professional and efficient service.
The office provides a variety of services, including 24/7 electronic alcohol monitoring, civil paper service for legal documents, and debt collection on distress warrants or execution of judgments. Deputies enforce state and county laws, conduct criminal investigations and vehicle crash reports, and transport inmates to court and medical appointments. The sheriff’s office also facilitates safety talks and school resource programs, ensuring proactive engagement with the community.
Additionally, the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for court security, arrest warrant service, sex offender registration, traffic enforcement, and event security. It also issues concealed pistol permits, performs fingerprinting for background checks, and manages sheriff’s sales. For individuals facing involuntary mental health commitments, the office handles secure transportation to designated facilities.
Hamlin County does not operate its own jail facility but instead contracts with the Brookings and Codington County Detention Centers to house inmates. The sheriff’s office remains dedicated to protecting the residents of Hamlin County, upholding the law, and ensuring the safety and security of the community through professional law enforcement services.
