The Helena PreRelease is overseen by the Montana Department of Corrections and consists of six community-based programs that supervise both pre-sentenced and sentenced offenders, prioritizing public safety and cost-effective alternatives to incarceration. Working in collaboration with the Department's Work Release Center, located at 805 Colleen St Helena, MT, and other criminal justice agencies, the division oversees thousands of offenders in the community.

Helena's Prerelease Center operates as a 105-bed community corrections facility catering to adult men residing in Montana. The facility's primary objective is to facilitate a smooth transition for offenders from correctional institutions to independent living within the community. Individuals may be directly transferred from a jail to the Center, under inmate status, if the Montana Department of Corrections deems prison unnecessary or if the individual has violated community placement conditions.

The Center emphasizes four crucial areas for successful rehabilitation: employment, education, treatment, and connections. Employment is regarded as a source of pride, identity, and financial security, laying the foundation for a crime-free lifestyle. The full-time job coordinator actively networks with the Helena community to secure employment opportunities, with residents typically finding jobs within 7-10 days.

Educational programming is instrumental in fostering a brighter future, encompassing life skills and job preparation. Collaborating with the Helena Adult Learning Center and Career Training Institute (CTI), the Center facilitates GED completion and other educational endeavors.

Treatment programming at the Center addresses diverse needs, with a multidisciplinary staff offering a range of services. Expertise in chemical dependency, job development, and care management ensures tailored responses to residents' requirements. Specialized services include chemical dependency and mental health evaluations, intensive outpatient addiction treatment, cognitive behavioral therapies, anger management, parenting classes, and victim impact panels.

The appeal of the prerelease center lies in its progressive transition approach, aimed at reintegrating individuals into fulfilling lives and rebuilding connections with family and friends. The center's welcoming environment, convenient amenities, and modern setting facilitate a positive return to normalcy. Moreover, the Center's network with professionals, educational institutions, and community agencies serves as a bridge to a better future for its residents.
