The Regional Jail East is a detention center located at 17320 New Kent Hwy Barhamsville, VA which is operated locally by the Henrico County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Henrico County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Barhamsville Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

Henrico County Regional Jail East is located on 76 acres in New Kent County and was built as part of a regional agreement between Goochland, Henrico and New Kent counties and is maintained and secured by the Henrico County Sheriff and the Henrico County Sheriff’s Office. Jail East is a state of the art “new generation” jail that uses the direct supervision approach and holds the distinction of being the first campus-style jail in the Commonwealth.

Direct Supervision - Direct supervision offers a barrier-free environment between deputies and inmates to encourage communication and more effective supervision. This style helps promote a proactive approach to solving problems. Deputies assigned to Jail Security and Jail Services maintain the safety and order of the facility. Jail Security staff work in the inmate housing areas, move inmates throughout the facility and see to their safety and well being. They provide security to the community by preventing jail disturbances or escapes. Jail Services staff provide programs and services to the inmate population which include laundry, recreation, visitation, property control, mail delivery and religious services.

One of Virginia’s most progressive facilities - Jail East is a progressive facility that features training and rehabilitation by offering a wide range of mental health and substance abuse services as well as educational and vocational training. Classes, programs and services are provided to assist the inmates to achieve their educational and vocational goals upon their release. These programs are offered through the cooperative effort of staff, community volunteers and outside agencies. The following are examples of the programs offered.

GED Preparation and Testing

  • Automotive Repair – completion offers Master Mechanic certification
  • Cosmetology -1500 hour preparation program for the state boards.

  • Substance abuse and relapse prevention
  • Group and individual counseling

Visitation Information

Henrico County Regional Jail East - Visitation

Visitation reservations may be made in person or by calling the Henrico facility where the inmate is being detained OR you may enter and Online Visitation Request and you will receive a confirmation email to confirm the day and time.

Visitors must provide the following information when making reservations

  1. Number and full names of all parties, (4) persons per visit
  2. Date of Birth of all visitors
  3. Inmates full name
  4. Contact Telephone Numbers

Based on availability, reservations may be made one (1) week in advance, Monday – Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm.

The time frames below highlight the schedule of visitation periods for each facility.

All males and females reservations will be in accordance with the current visitation schedule at both facilities.

In order to allow time for identification verification, visitors are requested to arrive (30) minutes prior to their scheduled reservation.

Depending on availability, late arrivals may constitute cancellation of your reservation

All rules, regulation, policy, procedures and laws governing inmate visitation must be strictly adhered to during this process unless otherwise indicated by competent authority
