After several years of failed health inspections, the Hughes County Jail officially closed its doors on November 8, 2023, as the county deliberated on the next steps. In 2020, the county voters rejected a proposal to slightly increase property taxes to fund the construction of a new jail, with the measure losing by over three-quarters of the vote. The jail, located beneath the courthouse in the heart of Holdenville, could house 27 to 30 detainees. By November 1, all inmates had been relocated to the Seminole County Jail in Wewoka, 10 miles away, without incident.

Inspection documents from the Oklahoma Health Department reveal that the Hughes County Jail has failed inspections consistently over the past four to five years. In contrast, the Seminole County Jail, a much larger facility with a capacity of just under 200 inmates, recorded three violations during its 2022 inspection. The average daily cost per inmate in the Seminole County Jail is nearly $75.
