At the Iberia Parish Work Release Facility, inmates with good behavior have access to traditional jobs in the public sector during the day. The program offers varying degrees of freedom, some even allowing prisoners to work during the week and return home, serving their sentences on only weekends. Depending on the terms (which change from time to time), inmates may reside in a halfway house or under home confinement when not working. As they near their release date, residents may transition to reintegration programs, with potential offers of full-time employment upon full release.
Work release program initiatives have proven benefits, including increased employment opportunities post-release, accelerated job acquisition, higher post-release earnings, and reduced recidivism rates among participants. IPWRF is committed to empowering inmates with skills and opportunities for successful reentry into society.
As part of the Iberia Parish Jail, the Iberia Work Release Program operates within a multifaceted facility capable of housing up to 520 prisoners. Our program serves a diverse inmate population, including New Iberia City inmates, Iberia Parish inmates, State Prisoners, Federal Prisoners, and individuals from other local agencies. With a dedicated team of approximately 84 employees overseeing daily operations, our focus remains on ensuring the security and well-being of all inmates under our care.
Central to our program is the Inmate Labor Program, where we engage over 160 inmates in various tasks throughout the City of New Iberia and the parish. These individuals assist agencies such as the Iberia Parish Government, New Iberia City Park, and Jeanerette Public Works with maintenance work, grass cutting, garbage collection, and more, all provided at no cost to the agencies.
Inmate labor is also integral to maintaining the jail's operations, including facility cleanliness, vehicle fleet maintenance, construction projects, and meal preparation. Crews of 36 inmates work shifts to prepare over 1,500 meals daily and assist in serving them.
Additionally, our facility houses an approximately 50-acre garden, maintained by IPSO personnel and inmates alike. The crops grown in this garden are utilized to feed incarcerated individuals, with surplus produce sold to local markets or donated to non-profit organizations like the St. Francis Diner in New Iberia. Active throughout most of the year, our garden contributes to our facility's self-sufficiency and community engagement efforts.
