The Jackson Co Jail is a detention center located at 600 S Main St Altus, OK which is operated locally by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Jackson County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Altus Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

The Jackson County Jail, completed in July 2002, accommodates both male and female inmates, with a capacity of up to 172 individuals. This facility provides a secure and controlled environment, ensuring the safety of both inmates and the public, as part of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office's commitment to upholding the law.

The jail staff comprises 15 dedicated detention officers, a full-time licensed practical nurse (LPN), and a physician who visits twice weekly and remains on call. The kitchen and maintenance supervisors oversee trustees working in the kitchen and throughout the facility. The jail frequently admits new detainees, some of whom are released on bail or placed under pretrial services, while others await their court appearances. Detainees are provided with necessary accommodations such as bedding and meals. Those who do not post bail within the first twenty-four hours must appear before a judge. During this initial appearance, conducted either in person or via telephone, the judge informs the detainee of the charges and sets the bond amount.

The intake process includes property inventory, medical screening, and booking. Afterward, inmates are assigned to the general population, with housing assignments based on the classification of their charges—whether felony or misdemeanor—to ensure proper management and safety within the facility. Compliance with jail rules can lead to a lower classification and more privileges, while rule violations or additional charges result in a higher classification and fewer privileges. Trustees, selected based on conduct and cooperation with staff, perform tasks such as cooking, laundry, and commissary management, often receiving minimal compensation or sentence reduction for their services.

The jail is designed with pods, featuring a large common area with affixed tables and attached seats, and individual cells typically on two levels. Inmates spend time in their cells and the pod for activities such as playing cards, games, reading, or watching television. Movement outside the pod, including trips to the commissary, library, or recreation area, is conducted under the constant supervision of unarmed correctional officers. The county jail environment is considered less stressful than a prison, due to the typically shorter sentences served.

The facility offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may involve high per-minute fees. Discounts on inmate calls can be found through specific programs, particularly beneficial for frequent communication. It is important to note that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher, ensuring they are new, untampered, and compliant with facility regulations. This policy helps prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. Items not received directly from the publisher will be rejected. However, letters and selfies can be sent to inmates using an easy-to-use app, with packages starting at $8.00.

Inmate workers are selected based on conduct and cooperation, and participation in the community service program sometimes leads to sentence reductions. The commissary is available weekly, with orders submitted via kiosk two days in advance. On holidays, spending limits may be increased. Upon receiving commissary items, inmates must present their ID, verify their order, and sign for it in the presence of the commissary employee. Indigent inmates are given essential hygiene items, including USPS stamps and writing materials.

Visitation Information

All visitation at the Jackson County Sheriff's Office is conducted via video by the vendor Prodigy. To participate in Prodigy video visitation, individuals must follow a simple four-step process. First, visit the Prodigy Visitation website and set up an account. Second, verify identity by uploading a copy of a driver's license and a profile picture. Third, deposit to a pre-paid or PIN debit account. Finally, when a video call is received, Prodigy will send an SMS message to the individual's cell phone with a link to join the call. Video visitation guidelines specify that all visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Approval for visitation, which takes 3 to 5 business days, is mandatory. Visitation is a privilege for both the inmate and the visitor, and these privileges can be revoked at any time for disciplinary reasons. Visitors must be at least 18 years old or have a parent or legal guardian present. No nudity or illicit activity is permitted during visits, as such behavior may result in a chargeable offense for both the visitor and the inmate. The Jackson County Jail reserves the right to terminate any visit at any time. All video visits are monitored and recorded.
