The Jefferson County Youth Academy is a medium to low-security detention center located at 5030 Hwy 69 Access Rd Beaumont, TX that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes of which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.
The juvenile justice system differs from the adult system, focusing on rehabilitation and recognizing the developmental differences in juveniles. It aims to protect both the child and the public and helps juveniles become productive adults.
Juveniles are detained if they pose a threat, may miss court, or violate court orders. Parental involvement is crucial for effective supervision and rehabilitation.
Key differences in terminology include "taken into custody" instead of "arrest" and "supervision" instead of "probation." Referrals usually come from law enforcement, and an intake social worker decides the juvenile's placement. An inquiry can lead to dismissal, corrective action, or court involvement.
The process includes a plea hearing, possible evaluations, a pre-trial conference, a fact-finding hearing, and a dispositional hearing to determine the case's outcome. Parents may need to cover associated costs.
The Jefferson County Youth Academy (J.C.Y.A.) Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (J.J.A.E.P.) Day Boot Camp is a collaborative initiative supported by the Jefferson County Commissioners, Sheriff's Office, Juvenile Probation Department, State District Judge, Region V, and various local school districts. The program is focused on uniting students and their parents or legal guardians in achieving shared goals. It serves students on probation, those under Deferred Prosecution, and those expelled from their home schools without court intervention. The facility is staffed by a principal, teachers, a deputy sheriff, a probation officer, and a supervisor from Juvenile Probation.
The mission of the Jefferson County Youth Academy is to provide at-risk students with a quality education through the combined efforts of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Juvenile Justice Judges, Juvenile Probation Department, parents, and the Jefferson County School Districts.
Eligibility for the program is open to males and females aged 10 to 16, with students allowed to remain in the program until they either fulfill their requirements or graduate, even if they turn 17. Students must undergo medical and mental health screenings by licensed personnel before entering the program, which is designed for juvenile offenders on probation and at-risk students. The academy can accommodate up to 90 students.
Juvenile facilities overseen by Jefferson County do not publish the names of the offenders housed in their facility. As such, there is no public forum for this information.
