The Kalamazoo County MI Juvenile Home is a medium to low-security detention center located at 1424 Gull Rd Kalamazoo, MI that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes of which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.

The juvenile justice system differs from the adult system, focusing on rehabilitation and recognizing the developmental differences in juveniles. It aims to protect both the child and the public and helps juveniles become productive adults.

Juveniles are detained if they pose a threat, may miss court, or violate court orders. Parental involvement is crucial for effective supervision and rehabilitation.

Key differences in terminology include "taken into custody" instead of "arrest" and "supervision" instead of "probation." Referrals usually come from law enforcement, and an intake social worker decides the juvenile's placement. An inquiry can lead to dismissal, corrective action, or court involvement.

The process includes a plea hearing, possible evaluations, a pre-trial conference, a fact-finding hearing, and a dispositional hearing to determine the case's outcome. Parents may need to cover associated costs.

The Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home (KCJH) Detention Unit is a secure, short-term facility with a capacity of 40 beds, designed for juveniles aged 11 to 17 who have been placed there by order of the Circuit Court. Juveniles are detained in this unit due to criminal delinquency, violations of court orders, breaches of court program rules, or absconding from court-ordered placements. The unit provides a safe, caring, and humane environment for juvenile offenders as they await court hearings or more permanent placements.

The mission of KCJH is to guide, teach, and habilitate young people, enabling them to better manage and control their growth and behavior. All programming is aimed at helping juveniles develop skills to reduce criminal and other offensive behaviors. The facility employs a behavior management program that rewards appropriate behaviors, to shape new behaviors through positive reinforcement.

Residents of the KCJH earn points in eight different skill areas: Appropriate Speech, Cooperation, Being in the Proper Area, Ability to Ignore Negativity, Dress Code, Respect, Positive Attitude, and Listening Skills.

Also, KCJH incorporates a guided group process into its behavior management system for detained youth. This group process promotes principle-based learning, providing skills for developing cognitive, social, and interpersonal relationships. The group environment is designed to build character, foster interpersonal relationships, encourage accountability, and support personal development. Through this comprehensive approach, KCJH aims to equip juveniles with the tools necessary for positive behavioral change and successful reintegration into society.
