The Kalkaska Co Jail is a detention center located at 605 N Birch St Kalkaska, MI which is operated locally by the Kalkaska County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Kalkaska County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Kalkaska Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.

The Kalkaska County Jail, an adult facility situated within the Village of Kalkaska, has a capacity of 62 inmates and operates under the governance of the Administrative Rules for Jails as mandated by the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC). Notably, over the past four years of inspections conducted by the MDOC, the Kalkaska County Jail has achieved 100% compliance, an honor shared with only four other counties in Michigan.

The facility is committed to providing inmates with a safe, humane, and secure environment. The dedicated staff works diligently to reduce recidivism while upholding the rights and dignity of the inmates. Custodial care is administered in a non-discriminatory manner, and the continuance of family and community contacts is encouraged. The inmate population comprises individuals awaiting pre-trial, detention, or those sentenced to terms not exceeding one year.

Several prisoner sentence reduction programs are available to qualifying inmates, including Trustee, Work Release, Supervised Work Details, and the Monitored Release Program (electronic tether). Inmates are also provided with educational courses such as General Education Studies, Substance Abuse, and Anger Management counseling. Medical and mental health services are available as needed, and area chaplains and church clergy frequently offer assistance and spiritual guidance.

Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at $8.00.

The jail offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may entail high fees per minute of usage. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.

Inmates sentenced to the Kalkaska County Jail may qualify for the Work Crew program, performing manual tasks such as construction, landscaping, and painting on community projects, including county and township parks and facilities. These tasks are supervised while the inmates are outside the jail.

Defendants may also qualify for work release or school release at the court's discretion. All subjects charged with a felony and outside a correctional facility are required by law to undergo GPS monitoring. The work release program permits a defendant to be incarcerated in the County Jail but released for a limited time each week to attend work. The fee for participation in the Work Release program is $20.00 per day, in addition to housing fees. Similarly, the School Release program allows incarcerated defendants to be released for a limited time each school day to attend classes, with a fee of $10.00 per day, in addition to housing fees.
