At the Lafourche Parish Transitional Work Program, inmates with good behavior have access to traditional jobs in the public sector during the day. The program offers varying degrees of freedom, some even allowing prisoners to work during the week and return home, serving their sentences on only weekends. Depending on the terms (which change from time to time), inmates may reside in a halfway house or under home confinement when not working. As they near their release date, residents may transition to reintegration programs, with potential offers of full-time employment upon full release.

Work release program initiatives have proven benefits, including increased employment opportunities post-release, accelerated job acquisition, higher post-release earnings, and reduced recidivism rates among participants. Lafourche TWP is committed to empowering inmates with skills and opportunities for successful reentry into society.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Transitional Work Program, established in collaboration with the Louisiana Department of Corrections (LDPSC), provides soon-to-be-released inmates with the opportunity to earn wages, aiding in their transition to life beyond prison. Through job assignments, inmates can acquire valuable skills to help them reintegrate into society, while also having access to GED preparation and testing, offshore safety courses, alcohol/drug rehabilitation programs, and bible study sessions facilitated by various religious groups.

Candidates must meet stringent guidelines for consideration in the program. Essentially, a candidate must be a model prisoner. The LDPSC determines eligibility, considering factors such as time of conviction, length of sentence, and the inmate’s conduct record. The DOC conducts interviews of all inmates who are eligible for such a program. Eligible inmates are then screened to ensure they meet all the requirements before a final decision is made.

Additionally, wardens of local jails can recommend DOC inmates for screening if they are eligible for the program.

Participation in the program is considered a privilege and is granted following a thorough screening process by the State of Louisiana. Inmates are expected to adhere to all program rules, and any deliberate violations may result in re-incarceration and additional jail time. In addition to their work assignments, Transitional Work Program inmate workers also prepare meals for the Meals on Wheels program, as well as for other inmates and staff members.
