The Leelanau Co Jail is a detention center located at 8525 E Government Center Dr Suttons Bay, MI which is operated locally by the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Leelanau County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Suttons Bay Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Leelanau County Jail employs a team of dedicated professionals to ensure its smooth operation 24/7, 365 days a year. This staff comprises 12 certified Correctional Officers and 4 Sergeants. All Correctional Officers hold certifications from the Michigan Sheriff's Coordinating and Training Counsel, a recognized authority within the Michigan Sheriff's Association. To maintain their qualifications, these officers undergo a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education annually.
Beyond their core responsibility of overseeing daily jail operations, Correctional Officers are entrusted with maintaining court security. They also handle inmate transportation to and from other jurisdictions and state prisons throughout Michigan. Additionally, they fulfill a variety of essential duties. Notably, some members of the Corrections Division possess instructor certifications in critical areas like firearms, TASER® usage, CPR/AED/First Aid, defensive tactics, OC/Pepper Spray, and fire safety. The team even boasts a Correctional Officer who actively participates in the area's Mutual Aid Dive Team, and another who holds hostage negotiation training and certification.
The Leelanau County Jail adheres to a fair and transparent housing fee structure. Inmates awaiting sentencing are not charged. Upon sentencing, a fee of $40 applies for the first day, followed by $15 for each subsequent day until release. Inmates approved for work release incur a $40 fee for the first day and $20 daily thereafter until release. Those sentenced by Leelanau County Courts and designated as "inmate worker" are exempt from further housing fees while maintaining that status. Inmates boarded from other counties are subject to the billing and regulations set forth by their boarding county.
The jail offers various programs to support inmate rehabilitation and reintegration. These include a work release option, contingent upon court approval and meeting jail qualifications. Work release participants can perform facility maintenance tasks such as kitchen duty, laundry services, floor maintenance, garden work, and seasonal snow removal. Additionally, the jail provides access to a G.E.D. program, life skills training, the Remain in Touch Children's Book Program, Project Unity For Life, religious services (Catholic services, bible study, and non-denominational services by Forgotten Man Ministries), and community corrections upon eligibility.
The Leelanau County Jail staff prioritizes maintaining a safe, secure, and sanitary environment for all. They are committed to ensuring all inmates are treated with fairness and in accordance with state and federal laws, as well as the United States Constitution.

The Leelanau County Jail utilizes a video visitation system that allows friends and family to remotely connect with inmates in the facility 7 days a week, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. It is the responsibility of the inmate and their friends and family to initiate this service and set up an account. Information on this service can be found at https://cidnet.net/friends-and-family-portal/#cidnet-ff-section.
On-site video visitation is also available for all inmates on Wednesdays between 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Like the remote visits, these require the inmate and their friends and family to initiate the service and set up an account. In addition, these on-site visits must be scheduled ahead of time using the system service.
Inmates that are considered “inmate workers” have an additional on-site visiting day on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Inmates are allowed 1 (one) visit per visiting day lasting at least ½ hour. Attorney visits and pastoral visits DO NOT count as a visit on visiting day.
