The Lincoln Co Afton Jail is a detention center located at 421 Jefferson St Suite 301 Afton, WY which is operated locally by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Lincoln County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Afton Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals.
The Lincoln County Detention Center operates in two distinct areas due to the expansive geographical coverage. The Afton Division holding facility, which can accommodate up to 5 inmates at a time, is managed by a single detention deputy. However, this facility can only hold inmates for up to 24 hours before they must be transported to the main jail in Kemmerer. The main detention facility, located in the County Seat of Kemmerer, can house up to 85 inmates and is staffed by 10 Detention Officers and 3 supervisors, ensuring its operation and maintenance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The duties of the detention staff encompass the primary care and custody of inmates, maintaining safety and security within the facility, and transporting inmates to and from court appearances. Additionally, they are responsible for picking up and transporting inmates to and from other agencies and addressing any medical concerns that arise during incarceration.
