The Los Angeles County Jail-Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall is a medium to low-security detention center located at 16350 Filbert St Sylmar, CA that is operated locally by the Juvenile Justice Department and holds youths awaiting the determination of punishment for the crimes of which they are accused. Most of the adolescents are here for less than two years.

The juvenile justice system differs from the adult system, focusing on rehabilitation and recognizing the developmental differences in juveniles. It aims to protect both the child and the public and helps juveniles become productive adults.

Juveniles are detained if they pose a threat, may miss court, or violate court orders. Parental involvement is crucial for effective supervision and rehabilitation.

Key differences in terminology include "taken into custody" instead of "arrest" and "supervision" instead of "probation." Referrals usually come from law enforcement, and an intake social worker decides the juvenile's placement. An inquiry can lead to dismissal, corrective action, or court involvement.

The process includes a plea hearing, possible evaluations, a pre-trial conference, a fact-finding hearing, and a dispositional hearing to determine the case's outcome. Parents may need to cover associated costs.

Juvenile Hall serves as an institutional setting that temporarily houses youth for primarily two reasons: prior to their court dates and/or after their court sentence, pending transition to out of home care. IDC is responsible for screening youth for admittance into Juvenile Hall in accordance with established procedures and legal requirements for detention.

Upon arrival at Juvenile Hall, the Admissions Intake officer shall notify IDC who will then come and interview the law enforcement agency that is bringing the minor in. IDC officer will make an assessment and determine if the minor is going to be detained or released on house arrest or release on a citation. The IDC officer will conduct an interview with the minor and contact the minor’s parent/legal guardian to inform their child is at Juvenile Hall. If he/she is detained, the parent is informed visiting hours, and future court appearance.

After receiving the okay to book from IDC, but before taking the minor into the holding area, the juvenile hall staff will do a preliminary interview with the minor asking if he/she has any injuries that we should be aware of. The minor will then be brought into the holding area where he/she will be Live Scanned if this has not already been done by the detaining agency. The minor is then showered, and changed into proper juvenile hall attire, and their personal clothes & property will be turned into the juvenile hall property room. After showering, the minor will then be thoroughly interviewed for any potential medical, physical, or psychological issues that might need to be addressed for his/her proper care. The minor is then moved to the Medical Unit where they will be assessed by medical staff as to their readiness to be admitted into juvenile hall. After being cleared by medical staff, the minor is sent to the receiving unit. The minor will then receive orientation to the facility and have a mental health screening.
